Alex Baranowski

Alex Baranowski is a Tony nominated composer and graduate of Paul McCartney’s LIPA.

His collaboration with Mercury winning band The xx was performed at the Hollywood Bowl by the LA Philharmonic Orchestra, and previously with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra for a live broadcast on BBC TV & BBC Radio 1. Other music collaborations include arrangements for Joy Division’s Peter Hook and composing for virtuoso violinist Daniel Hope’s Deutsche Grammphon album Spheres alongside Max Richter and Ludovico Einaudi, which reached number 1 in the UK and number 3 in the US Classical Billboard charts.

Music for film includes the twice BAFTA nominated McCullin, for which Alex won a Music + Sound Award for Best Feature Film score in Cannes, as well as Attacking The Devil and We Are Many, both released in cinemas in 2015. Other recent cinema releases include A Streetcar Named Desire broadcast live from the Young Vic theatre for NT Live, and Maxine Peake’s Hamlet from the production at the Manchester Royal Exchange. Short films include The Departure directed by Gillian Anderson as well as Shelter; Dorothea; Future Inc; The Messenger with multi award winning director Dougal Wilson and The Outsider with Oscar nominated directors Smith & Foulkes.

Previous dance collaborations with Jonathan Watkins include Kes (Sheffield Theatres), Sofa (Channel 4) and Together Alone (Ballet Black, Royal Opera House). Other music for dance includes Dreaming in Code and In The Dust for 2Faced Dance Company (the former a collaboration with composer Angus MacRae).

Alex’s extensive work composing for theatre has included productions at the Royal National Theatre, Royal Shakespeare Company, Young Vic, Shakespeare’s Globe, Royal Court, Donmar, Manchester International Festival, Sheffield Crucible as well as London’s West End and New York’s Broadway. These have included collaborations with directors including Sir Nicholas Hytner, Michael Grandage, Danny Boyle, Rupert Goold, Lyndsey Turner and Benedict Andrews on numerous Olivier and Tony nominated productions. These have included The Cripple of Inishmaan (Broadway / West End) for which he was nominated for a Tony award; Frankenstein (as Music Associate with Underworld), Hamlet (National Theatre / NT Live); Earthquakes in London (Headlong / National Theatre) Macbeth, East is East (West End); A Streetcar Named Desire (Young Vic); The Masque of Anarchy (Manchester International Festival); Fathers and Sons, Salt Root & Roe, The Dance of Death (Donmar); The EL Train (Hoxton Hall); Henry VI Parts I, II & III (Shakespeare’s Globe and Tour); Betrayal, Othello, The Village Bike (Sheffield Theatres); Hamlet, The Last Days of Troy (Manchester Royal Exchange); Cornelius (59e59 New York & Finborough); Mixed Marriage(Finborough) and The Sea Plays (Old Vic Tunnels).

He is presently writing his first studio album.
